About a year ago, I had to write a five-page essay for a linguistics class about a topic of my choosing, and I chose a topic that was extremely interesting to me: The removal of the letters 'ch' and 'll' from the Spanish alphabet. Back in 1994, the academy for updating the spanish language decided to no longer recognize the letters 'ch' or 'll', as they were considered by many linguists to not be letter, but rather, just digraphs. However, this decision didn't catch on around the Spanish speaking world until 2010, when the academy decided that 'ch' and 'll' would no longer be considered letters worldwide. It was an essay I was very proud of that dived deep into the linguistic interpretation behind the decision, the hilarious outlash from people who didn't fully understand the change, and a conversation starter on whether or not the academy has the right to impose their decision about the language on all Spanish speakers worldwide. However, this conversation starter would have worked much better in presentational form, for a large group to ponder about, not just the TA grading my essay. With that in mind, I decided to repurpose this essay into an interactive poster using ThingLink, a program that lets you add interactive text and video to an image. I created a basic image which showed the main aspects of what my essay was about in a mostly visual form, then added the talking points I would have presented about in the form of blurbs on the image for anyone interested to read about. Below is an embed and a link to my ThingLink:
Embedded to the left and linked above is a Padlet I created showcasing four incredibly valuable resources for fostering communication and collaboration in the classroom. I chose to use Weebly, Microsoft Teams (formerly Flipgrid/Flip), AnswerGarden, and The Better Arguments Project to showcase some ways teachers can encourage more communication in class. Also, on the Padlet is a 3-minute audio recording where I go into more detail over these resources, including my experience with them over the years and how I think they help with communication and collaboration.
